Book of Henryków

Between 1268 and 1273, Abbey Peter wrote in Latin the famed “Book of Henryków”, continued by his successor until 1310. The Book contains the oldest written sentence in Polish: “Day ut ia pobrusa a ti poziwai” (Here, let me grind and you take a rest). The words were uttered by Boguchwał, a peasant from a nearby village, to his wife. The abbey considered the peasant’s offer to help his wife with the chores (i.e. grinding grain on hand mill) to be such an extraordinary occurrence that he decided to quote his words in his book, but in the original language that it was uttered.
