In 1273, Prince Henry IV the Righteous granted the Cistercians from Kamieniec the right to mine gold in the region. Thus, a mining settlement was founded which was granted borough rights already in 1344. The pinnacle of the town’s growth came at the end of the 15th Century and in the first half of the 16th Century when it became a bustling hub of gold mining and milling. The town also had a mint of the Dukes of Münsterberg – yet another trace of the Duchy. Today, the old traditions of gold mining and minting are continued by the local Gold Mine, one of the greatest tourist attractions in the area.
