The “Book of Henryków”, written in Latin by Abbey Peter of Henryków between 1268 and 1273, and continued until 1310 by his successor, contains the oldest written sentence in Polish: “Day ut ia pobrusa a ti poziwai” (Here, let me grind and you take a rest). The words were uttered by Boguchwał, a peasant from a nearby village, to his wife. The abbey considered the peasant’s offer to help his wife with grinding grain on handmill to be such an extraordinary occurrence that he decided to quote his words in his book, but in the original language that it was uttered. That memorable moment is said to have occurred in a village near Henryków which was then given the name of Brukalice. Today, at the road leading out of Brukalice towards Henryków, there is a stone obelisk commemorating that impactful event.
