Towering above the village is Fort Silberberg - the largest mountain fortification in Europe. This impressive example of military engineering was built between 1765 and 1777, after Silesia had been conquered by Prussia, as one of the multiple fortresses on the border of Prussia and the state of the House of Habsburg. The Fort was never captured; even Napoleon’s troops in 1807 ended the siege after the Treaties of Tilsit had been signed. In 1867, the Fort lost its military significance and was turned from active military defence facility into a training ground, and at the end of the 19th Century, it became a tourist attraction. During World War II, the Fort served as Oflag VIIIb (prisoner of war camp) for Polish officers. After the war, Fort Silberberg gradually fell into ruin. Several years ago, systematic efforts have been started to restore it and make it available to visitors. Today, Fort Silberberg is one of the main tourist attractions of Lower Silesia. From the top of the fortress, you can marvel at the magnificent vistas of Bardo Mountains and Owl Mountains, and the Sudety Foothills.
