Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Kamieniec Ząbkowicki

Kamieniec Ząbkowicki

The Cistercian monastery and the massive Gothic parish Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, built between 1290 and 1350, and later remodelled. The abbey in Kamieniec was founded by Augustinians in 1210 and taken over by Cistercians in 1248. The Medieval Gothic church underwent remodelling in Baroque style at the turn of the 17th and 18th Century.

Perhaps the most impressive feature of the church is its main altar, the largest wooden altar in Poland (over 22 m high). The altar was built in the years 1704–1705 by Krzysztof Koeniger. The altar features paintings by Michael Willmann. Inside the church in Kamieniec, you will also see the beautiful statues of the Fourteen Holy Helpers by Thomas Weissfeldt, created between 1709 and 1711. The lavish furnishing of the church is complete with numerous side altars with paintings by Jan Krzysztof Liszka, as well as sculptures and ornamental pulpit from 1708.

The former monastery building now serves as the office of the local branch of the National Archives.
